The cells inside the vaginal wall contain sugar, which are released during normal cell shedding. This sugar is broken down into lactic acid by the lactic acid bacteria in the vagina.
A healthy vagina flora is acidic with a pH level of 3.8 to 4.4 which can suppresses the growth of harmful germs, which helps to prevent an imbalance of the vaginal microecology.

The acidic vaginal environment can be disrupted by various external factors, causing the pH to rise above 4.5.
E.g.
- Reduced numbers of lactobacilli due to use of antibiotics
- During pregnancy, breast-feeding
- Bodily secretions

The growth of harmful germs in the vagina would be encouraged. Subsequently, these germs can overgrow and suppress the natural lactobacilli flora which may result in an imbalance of the vaginal flora.
In many cases, for women prone to repeated vaginal microecology imbalances, vaginal use of lactic acid can help to support the self-regulation of acidic pH levels.
Vagisan Lactic Acid maintains natural pH level of the vagina through fast acidification. It helps to prevent imbalance of vaginal flora and inhibits growth of harmful germs.

How To Use

The duration of administration is generally 5–7 days, one pessary a day.
For regular maintenance of normal pH levels in the vagina, e.g. in women prone to the imbalance of vaginal flora, Dr. Wolff’s Vagisan Lactic Acid can also be safely used two to three times a week over a longer period.
